How to Draw a Modernized Classic Car
Do you love the classic body style of cars, but want to know how it would look with some modernized characteristics? Well, go get your pencil and fire up your imagination!
Getting Ideas
1) You could make up a completely new design or mix two different designs together, but it’s easier to just look around and know for sure what you like in your classics and combine your ideas into one cool looking modernized classic. Go onto Google and look up some of your favorite cars and body styles. I suggest picking out at least two or three of your favorite classic and modern body styles and characteristics (scoops, hoods, rims, headlights, etc.) For my example, I will look up the “1968 Mustang GT Fastback” and also “Mustang Concepts”. I am attracted to the good ol’ classic look, so I love to do modernized classic cars concepts.
Start 'er Up
2) Once you have your ideas, narrow it down some more and stick to the designs you like the most. However, keep in mind that sometimes a few characteristics will not look well with some body styles. This can be changed by tweaking one or the other, or even both the body style and the characteristic. For the most part, you will be tweaking… a LOT. I promise your car will go through at least half a dozen major "phases" or "transformations" before you are happy with how it looks.
Get 'er Done!
3) Now the fun part begins… grab a good pencil, a good eraser and some paper and start sketching. Before you add ANY detail to the car, draw the basic shape of the body and refine it with your eraser until you are happy with how it looks. Hold your pencil gently if you are drawing luxurious curves (such as on a classic Corvette Stingray, Dodge Cuda, AC Cobra, Porsche 911, Lamborghini Miura, Aston Martin DB6, etc.) Sketch in a sweeping motion with your hand instead of a continuous, hard line. It will be easier to erase and clean up the excess lines once you begin to finish your design. Try out how modern headlights look on your classic body, or, if you are using a modern body, give it the traditional look of its classic counterparts.
Now that you’re done with your AWESOME modernized classic sketch, you may keep the way it is or you may import it into Photoshop and add color, depth, and detail to paint, decals and chrome finishes. Either way, it’s an awesome design to show off!
